Rafael Nadal defeated Roger Federer in the French Open final. Rafael Nadal felt at home at Roland Garros. Nadal was in top form Sunday, when he beat Roger Fededer and in so, winning his fourth consecutive Roland Garros title. This particular win for Rafael Nadal made sure that Roger Federer did not complete a career Grand Slam.
Everyone who bought Roger federer tickets, and Rafael Nadal tickets, expected a Nadal vicotry. He won 6-1, 6-3, 6-0. This game was roger Federer’s worst loss in his 173 Grand Slam matches.
“When I was playing, I didn’t believe the match,” said French Open winner, Rafael Nadal. “I feel the match has to be closer.”
Rafael Nadal is ranked 2nd in the world. Nadal improved to 28-0 at Roland Garros and became the second man to win 4 consecutive French Open titles. Bjorn Borg did this before him in 1978-81.
Nadal Rafael won all 21 sets while losing only 41 games.
“I can only praise him for the level of play he’s had for the last two weeks and today again under pressure,” Federer said. “To come up with a performance like this under pressure shows what a great champion he is.”
“It’s a rough loss,” Roger Federer said. “I’ll try again next year.”
When Nadal won the French Open final, he walked up to Roger Federer and they hugged each other.
“Today it was tough for Roger, I think,” Rafael Nadal said, “and I have to be respectful with one very good guy.”
Roger Federer is still World No. 1. Roger federer will now tuen his attention to Wimbledon 2008, where he will try to win his sixth consecutive Wimbledon title.
“I still go out of this tournament with a positive mind-set, not with a mind-set, `Oh my God, I had no chance today,”’ Roger Federer said. “I’m going to look forward to grass. I think the second half of the season, hopefully, is going to be better than the first.”
Roger Federer has lost eight matches this year so far. Nadal’s uncle and coach, Toni Nadal, said Federer “appeared out of sorts in the final.”
“I don’t know whether he didn’t have a good feel for his shots or if he was over-thinking,” |Toni Nadal said. “What I see is that he’s missing a bit of self-confidence. He never looked comfortable. Maybe it’s a mental block.”
By the fourth game, Federer was kicking the clay in frustration. By the second set, he was screaming at himself. By the third set, he couldn’t even win a game.
The last time Roger Federer lost a set at love was in 1999, when he was not yet a top-50 player.
“When you really cannot play your game, and he can play exactly what he wants from the baseline, you end up with scores like this sometimes,” Federer said. “He hardly made unforced errors, and when he’s on the attack, he’s lethal.”
The only male to win more Roland Garros titles was six-time champion Borg, who was there at the Roland Garros stadium to watch the final.
“Roger’s going to be back,” Bjorn Borg said, adding with a laugh, “and so will Rafa.”
