Wimbledon 2008 - Could this be the third time that Federer and Nadal battle it out on Centre Court for the Wimbledon 2008 Championship? Highly likely at the rate these two are playing at the moment.

Federer kept up his impressive record at the All England Club this year by thrashing Mario Ancic 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 to reach his 17th consecutive Grand Slam semi-final.

Rafael Nadal was on after Federer and produced an even more impressive feat by beating Andy Murray 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

Federer now faces former world No1. Marat Safin, who narrowly defeated Feliciano Lopez 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/1), 6-3. Nadal will either be up against Arnaud Clement or Rainer Schuettler.

If Federer and Nadal can win those matches they will be up against each other in a Grand Slam final for the sixth time and the 14th in all tournaments.

Nadal’s confidence is at an impressive high, and after thrashing Federer in the French Open final last month,  he will in no doubt, be up for winning Wimbledon 2008 Final if he makes it. But he has yet Federer on grass, losing to him in 2 successive Wimbledon finals.

Safin beat Federer the last time they met in a Grand Slam semi-final at the 2005 Australian Open, so the defending champion has no intention of underestimating his next opponent.

“I never looked at Safin like No. 89 in the world. That’s ridiculous. He knows that himself,” Federer said.”He’s finally showing again what he can do. It’s just quite surprising he does it here at Wimbledon in some ways, because he used to dislike playing on this surface.

“But I feel so comfortable on this Centre Court that my confidence level is obviously very high.”

Nadal (after defeating Scotsman Andy Murray) admitted he had never played better at a Wimbledon Tournament.

Federer Will “Rage, Rage Against The Dying of the Light”

Everyone knows that when it’s Wimbledon time, It Federer time! If Roger Federer wins Wimbledon 2008, he will become the 1st man in History of the Wimbledon Championships to win six successive Wimbledon Titles- beating Bjorn Borg’s (and Federer’s own) of five. Not a bad achievement. But can it be done? Looking at Rafael Nadal’s performance, many avid tennis fans believe this is the end of the awesome ‘Federer Era’.

Federer finds himself in a battle to keep his reputation, but with Rafael Nadal right behind him, watching his every move (even on grass), the question will be… Does Federer still feel at home at Wimbledon and even more so, can Federer win Wimbledon 2008?

It seemed to go down-hill for Roger Federer when he lost the 2008 Australian Open. While Federer might have had glandular fever during Aus Open, there was no fever to blame when he lost to Nadal at the 2008 French Open. The Spaniard thrashed Federer, whilst handing him his worst defeat ever.

There is, however, a ray of light at the end of the road for Federer: The Swiss legend has not lost a match on grass in over 6 years; The World number one secured a trophy at Halle to show he has what it takes to win every grass tournament; Federer has not lost at Wimbledon in five years and he believes he is the favourite going into Wimbledon 2008.

“I haven’t lost on grass for six years. I still definitely feel very strong about my chances and being the big favourite going into grass,” he said.

Nadal has failed to beat Federer in the previous two Wimbledon encounters. The World number two won his first ever Grasscourt trophy last week at The Queen’s Club and looking at the Federer vs Nadal meetings, Nadal leads 11-6.

Some tennis fans say Nadal’s turn will come to win a Wimbledon Championship. The Spaniard is only 22. Another youngster not to be forgotten is Novak Djokovic, who stole Federer’s Aus Open Title in January this year.

“It’s motivating to see all these young players coming up, but I’m quite confident the second half of the season is going to be better than the first,” said Federer.

Bjorn Borg would love to see Federer overtake his record, but feels Nadal should be watched.

“If he survives the first two or three rounds, then I pick Nadal to win Wimbledon,” said Borg.

“He’s playing really good on the grass. He’s feeling very comfortable.” But Federer has an ally in Andy Roddick who he beat in the 2004 and 2005 finals.

“Playing the final on red clay against Nadal is not the same as playing on a grasscourt,” said Roddick.

“If anything, it’s going to annoy him to where he wants to prove everybody wrong. Maybe if he wins it six times, people won’t question him. People are sitting here saying, ‘Can Roger win Wimbledon?’ Yes, he can. He’s won it five times.”

Some are hoping Federer will “Rage, rage against the dying of the light” while others hope he “will go gentle into that good night”. What do you think? Leave us a comment.

And so it begins. Roger Federer has been warned by Rafael Nadal that the world number one’s reign as Wimbledon champion is about to come to an end.

Rafael Nadal’s brilliant performances on the clay courts at the French Open have ensured him 4 successive Roland Garros titles, and yet he looked just as at home on grass during Sunday’s 7-6, 7-5 win over Novak Djokovic in the Queen’s final.

Nadal is very convinced that this will be the year that he takes down Roger Federer in the Wimbledon 2008 championship at the All England Club in London.

Nadal’s previous defeats against Roger Federer at previous Wimbledon Championships have only made him (Nadal) more determined to go on and win his first title as Wimbledon 2008 champion. And in doing so, he would be the first Spaniard to do so.

While Rafael Nadal was becoming the first male to win the French Open (Roland Garros) and Queen’s in the same year, Roger Federer has also been getting back in the winning habit in Halle.

Rafael Nadal on Roger Federer noticing the win, “For sure he will have noticed. We have very good relationship. For sure I think he’s happy for me and I am happy for him”.

“To win a prestigious tournament like this, a very traditional tournament is very nice, and it will give me more confidence.

“But I was full of confidence after Roland Garros too, so for me confidence doesn’t matter.

“You never know what’s going on in Wimbledon. I think I am playing well. And if I continue playing like this, I am going to have chances for have a good result there.

“Everybody can win it. I can for sure. I played two finals. Why can’t I win it? But it will be a lot of work to win Wimbledon.

“Right now it is very easy for everybody to say I am one of the favourites. But the second Sunday of Wimbledon, we will know who is going be the favourite.”

While Nadal has headed back to Mallorca for three days, Djokovic will stay in England ahead of the start date of Wimbledon 2008 on June 23.

Djokovic was the Australian Open champion, and was upset that he missed several opportunities to avenge his defeat against Nadal at the French Open 2008.

“It’s good to play him before Wimbledon one time, just to see how it goes and if I’m playing better on grass,” Djokovic said.

“I think I’m playing better and better match after match. I’ve improved my serve a lot. There are some things that I need to work on still, so I have time before Wimbledon.

“But I’m not thinking about Wimbledon 2008 semifinals and Wimbledon 2008 finals already. It’s a long way through.

“I’ve had an intense couple of months. It’s been great for me. I’ve achieved a lot. I just hope to keep on going. The most important thing is to find the balance between work and relaxation and taking some time off.”

For a few moments at the Queen’s final, Djokovic had the better of Nadal.

After his win at the Australian Open 2008, Djokovic believes his confidence has gone through the roof and he expect that belief to be crucial at Wimbledon.

“It makes a difference being a Grand Slam champion at any tournament,” he said. “You have a lot of confidence. You approach every tournament in a different way, with more belief.

“You know that you’re on the top. In my case, I’m happy that I can play a great tennis on all kinds of surfaces, which makes me an all around player, which is very important in today’s tennis.”
