Previous Wimbledon Ladies Finals Winner, Venus Williams takes on Russia’s Elena Dementieva today on Wimbledon’s Centre Court. Venus will be firm favourite going into this match, although she is ranked seventh in the world compared to Dementieva’s rank of fifth.

Looking at Venus’ performance throughout Wimbledon 2008, its difficult to see the American would not make the ladies final’s this year. Venus has played with confidence and always managed to keep a required lead in all matches.

Dementieva, on the other hand, seems to do extremely well in the beginning of her matches, but fails to capitalise on the important stages- a perfect example would be the Russian’s match against compatriot Petrova, when she was leading 6-1 5-1 and ended up losing the second set.

Dementieva has made it to only 2 Grand Slam final’s before, back in 2004, but has never won any of them.

Give Dementieva credit for her good humor though, “It was like, ‘Oops, I did it again,’ ” she said. “But I feel good about the semifinals. Venus is the defending champion, so it’s all pressure on her. I really have nothing to lose, just play my game, enjoy the moment.”

Wimbledon 2008 - Could this be the third time that Federer and Nadal battle it out on Centre Court for the Wimbledon 2008 Championship? Highly likely at the rate these two are playing at the moment.

Federer kept up his impressive record at the All England Club this year by thrashing Mario Ancic 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 to reach his 17th consecutive Grand Slam semi-final.

Rafael Nadal was on after Federer and produced an even more impressive feat by beating Andy Murray 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

Federer now faces former world No1. Marat Safin, who narrowly defeated Feliciano Lopez 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/1), 6-3. Nadal will either be up against Arnaud Clement or Rainer Schuettler.

If Federer and Nadal can win those matches they will be up against each other in a Grand Slam final for the sixth time and the 14th in all tournaments.

Nadal’s confidence is at an impressive high, and after thrashing Federer in the French Open final last month,  he will in no doubt, be up for winning Wimbledon 2008 Final if he makes it. But he has yet Federer on grass, losing to him in 2 successive Wimbledon finals.

Safin beat Federer the last time they met in a Grand Slam semi-final at the 2005 Australian Open, so the defending champion has no intention of underestimating his next opponent.

“I never looked at Safin like No. 89 in the world. That’s ridiculous. He knows that himself,” Federer said.”He’s finally showing again what he can do. It’s just quite surprising he does it here at Wimbledon in some ways, because he used to dislike playing on this surface.

“But I feel so comfortable on this Centre Court that my confidence level is obviously very high.”

Nadal (after defeating Scotsman Andy Murray) admitted he had never played better at a Wimbledon Tournament.

Safin vs Lopez Result from Wimbledon 2008

Marat Safin beats Feliciano Lopez from spain 3-6 7-5 7-6 6-3. Safin was not in good form throughout the first set, but managed to pull himself back into the game during the second and third sets.

Federer Outshines Ancic For Place in Semi’s

Roger Federer beat Mario Ancic of Croatia on Wimbledon’s Centre Court 6-1 7-5 6-4. The World number one last played Ancic back in 2002, and lost during Wimbledon’s Opening round. Ancic’s win would turn out to be Federer’s last match he’s ever lost on grass to date- a remarkable achievement.Wimbledon 2008.

With Federer’s win over Ancic today, he pushes his grasscourt win tally to 64- and it seems no one will ever stop the mighty Federer.

Federer showed the Croat that history was not going to repeat itself and within the opening set, built a 6-1 lead.

Ancic improved after a rain delay lasting more than 2 hours, playing a full part in some high quality rallies and the second set went with serve until the 11th game when the Croat netted a volley to give his opponent the break point.

Federer was in full flow in the third set and won the match in one hour and 40 minutes on his first match point, going into a semifinal against either Marat Safin or Feliciano Lopez.
