Nadal Wins Wimbledon 2008

Rafael Nadal beat World Number One, Roger Federer in the Wimbledon 2008 Final today 6-4, 6-4 , 6(5)-7(7), 6(8)-7(10), 9-7 Nadal whipped out every shot in the tennis book to deny Federer from winning his sixth consecutive Wimbledon title.

Rain stopped play at Centre Court on two occasions, but that did not dampen the spirits of the packed crowd at the All England Club. While Federer stirred up 26 aces compared to Nadal’s 6, it was not enough to stop the Spaniard.

Nadal played to a well deserved victory, proving to everyone that beating Federer at the French Open this year, was not a lucky result. The Spaniard lost to Federer in the Wimbledon Final during 2006 and 2007, but history did not repeat itself today at Centre Court.

Federer, current world number one, won the opening game in the first set but Nadal pulled two back to make it 2-1. Nadal kept his one game lead until 5-4, where he managed extend his lead to two games and secure the first set 6-4.

During the second set, the Swiss stepped up to take the lead 4-1, in what looked a definant Federer set. Rafa had other plans- The World Number Two made a comeback of note winning 5 games in a row to win the set 6-4, again.

There were countless of moments, during the third set, when Federer would extend a game to 40-15, only for Nadal to come flying back to deuce. Federer would then grab a couple of game points and Nadal would bring the score back down to deuce and win the game. There were times too when Nadal looked as if he was only toying with the world number one, giving him hope of winning a set, but only hope- nothing more.

Federer was in the lead 5-4, during the third set, when rain interupted play for one hour. When the World number one and two returned to play, the set ended on 6-6, and Federer won the tiebreak 7-5.

With Federer back in the game, the fourth set was up for grabs- which led to 6-6 again. The tiebreak was a rollercoaster affair, with Nadal losing out on 2 match points and Federer clinching it 10-8.

Rains stopped play during the fifth and final set at 2-2 and drizzled down for about 20 min. Federer led by a game until 6-6. The nerves of every single person in Centre Court, were finished! Had the Wimbledon Mens final come down to this?

Federer extended his lead to 7-6, only for Nadal to pull two back and make it 8-7. The game seemed as though it would never end. One minute you thought Nadal was going to win it, the next you were convinced Federer has it in the bag. Federer missed one break point, but it was not enough to stop Rafael Nadal.

A true classic of a Wimbledon Final!

Wimbledon 2008 - Could this be the third time that Federer and Nadal battle it out on Centre Court for the Wimbledon 2008 Championship? Highly likely at the rate these two are playing at the moment.

Federer kept up his impressive record at the All England Club this year by thrashing Mario Ancic 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 to reach his 17th consecutive Grand Slam semi-final.

Rafael Nadal was on after Federer and produced an even more impressive feat by beating Andy Murray 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

Federer now faces former world No1. Marat Safin, who narrowly defeated Feliciano Lopez 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/1), 6-3. Nadal will either be up against Arnaud Clement or Rainer Schuettler.

If Federer and Nadal can win those matches they will be up against each other in a Grand Slam final for the sixth time and the 14th in all tournaments.

Nadal’s confidence is at an impressive high, and after thrashing Federer in the French Open final last month,  he will in no doubt, be up for winning Wimbledon 2008 Final if he makes it. But he has yet Federer on grass, losing to him in 2 successive Wimbledon finals.

Safin beat Federer the last time they met in a Grand Slam semi-final at the 2005 Australian Open, so the defending champion has no intention of underestimating his next opponent.

“I never looked at Safin like No. 89 in the world. That’s ridiculous. He knows that himself,” Federer said.”He’s finally showing again what he can do. It’s just quite surprising he does it here at Wimbledon in some ways, because he used to dislike playing on this surface.

“But I feel so comfortable on this Centre Court that my confidence level is obviously very high.”

Nadal (after defeating Scotsman Andy Murray) admitted he had never played better at a Wimbledon Tournament.

Wimbledon 2008 - Williams VS Radwanska - Day 8 QuaterFinals

The 19-year-old Agnieszka Radwanska from Poland must be really impressed with herself. Not only did knock out Svetlana Kuznetsova on Centre Court yesterday afternoon, but in doing so, she has secured her place in the Wimbledon 2008 quarter-finals for the first time in her career.

Radwanksa won the Wimbledon Championship junior title in 2005. Not only that, but she secured the Eastbourne title a few weeks back and looked really comfortable on the grass against the Russian world No 4. yesterday afternoon.

14th seeded Radwanska now has to face former Wimbledon Tennis champion Serena Williams. Williams knocked out sister Urszula in the second round. But riding high from today’s victory, the teenager cannot wait for the challenge, saying she has “nothing to lose”.

“I know Serena and I know how she’s playing. For sure I saw a bit of my sister’s match against Serena, so I know what I have to do. I just have to play aggressive and that’s it.”

Radwanska admits she will have to be on top form to beat the American Williams.

“She’s a very strong player and she can hit the ball very strong. Even in Berlin she was playing unbelievable against me. I was playing not that bad and I won just four games.” She added: “It is going to be a challenge for me…I will enjoy and try my best.”
