Rain, rain and more rain! But that did not dampen Rafael Nadal’s fighting spirit. After being given the runaround by the rain for 3 days, Nadal wasted little time in whiping French qualifier Nicolas Devilder 6-4 6-0 6-1. Nadal’s 1st round match was played over 3 wet days, but he wont be complainning as he adds another victory at Roland Garros, bring his record to a whoping 23 victories, out of 23 games. Thats 100% ladies and gentlemen.
Nadal broke for a 4-2 lead in the opener but Devilder responded quickly with a break of his own. Nadal finished the first game in 51 minutes on his 2nd set point when Devilder netted a backhand serving at 4-5.
The Spaniard quickly won the next 5 games before the rain came and after a 90-minute break went on to book a place in round three against 26th seed and fellow left-hander Jarkko Nieminen of Finland.
