Kohlschreiber Ends His Munich Open

Philipp Kohlschreiber (third-seed and defending champion of Munich Open) has ended his Munich Open tour due to a sudden virus. How unexpected is that?

The 24-year-old withdrew just as play was about to get underway. But tournament director and Germany’s Davis Cup captain Patrik Kuehnen was only informed last year’s champion was out with flu on Tuesday afternoon. When play finally began on Tuesday afteroon, Kohlschreiber’s 11th hour replacement Julio Silva from Brazil beat Matthias Bachinger 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Second seed Fernando Gonzalez from Chile beat Israeli Dudi Sela 6-3, 6-4, while France’s Gael Monfils knocked out Russia’s Igor Andreev 6-3, 6-4.

Another competition that is around the corner is Wimbledon and Wimbledon 2008 is set to be a promising fortnight. Make sure you get your hands on Wimbledon tickets.

Nadal beat Roger Federer 7-5, 7-5 in Sunday’s final and what a game that was! Nadal came back from 0-4 down in the second set, to win 7-5 and won the last 7 out of 8 games. Unbelievable

Nadal

Rafael Nadal hailed his historic fourth successive Monte Carlo Masters title triumph as a “special moment” which rewarded his fighting spirit. It was Nadal’s 24th career title and he became the first man since 1914 to win four Monte Carlo titles in a row!

It was also his 22nd successive victory in the tournament and 98th win in his last 99 claycourt matches; his only loss was in the Hamburg Masters final in 2007 when Federer brought his record 81-match winning streak to a halt. To hammer home his dominance, he then teamed up with compatriot Tommy Robredo to win the doubles as well.

“If I was going to lose the second set, I was going to lose 6-2 or something, anything but 6-0,” said the champion.

“So I was determined to win every point. He was controlling the court, so I had to come inside more.

“To win this tournament for a fourth time is a special moment. I didn’t play well in Indian Wells or Miami and if I was going to lose here then I was going to lose playing well.”

Federer described Nadal as a ‘hell of a claycourt player’.

Sunday’s defeat was the world number one’s third loss in a row in the final against the Spaniard and his seventh defeat in eight claycourt clashes, the deadly slow surface on which the 21-year-old Mallorcan, the triple French Open champion, is the undisputed ruler.

Nadal fears Clay Dominance

Posted by admin

Rafael Nadal

MyWimbledon2008- Three time French Open champion, Rafael Nadal admitted that it would be a difficult task to maintain his claycourt performance. The spaniard has mastered tennis’s slowest and most demanding surface and opponents are afraid of his unpredictable strengths.

How is this for a record? Nadal has played 111 matches on clay, winning 108 of them! He has never been beaten at Roland Garros, having played 21 games there and in Monte Carlo he has won 20 out of 21! Wow!

Withe this amazing CV, Nadal said, “To repeat every year, to win every title, it’s going to be impossible.

“I arrived here trying to do my best. If my best is quarterfinals, semifinals, the final, champion, I don’t know.”

Good Luck Nadal

Kuerten

Its the Barcelona Open next week but it will be a sad one for Gustavo Kuerten. Due to a muscle injury, he will not be able to play. Three time French Open Champion, Kuerten would have played in his penultimate event, but will have retire, by ending his 14-year career at Roland Garos next month.

Kuerten said it is a shame not to play as the Barcelona Open would have been a very special tournament.

Murray to play Djokovic

Posted by admin

andy

Britain’s Andy Murray beat Italian Filippo Volandri 6-4 6-1 at the Monte Carlo Masters on Tuesday to line up a third-round match with Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic, the Australian Open champion, put in a solid performance to defeat Croatia’s Ivan Ljubicic 6-3 6-3.

Murray broke to love in the sixth game of the first set, only for Volandri to break back in the seventh under threatening skies in the principality.

However, the Scot took the set after 44 minutes by breaking his opponent’s serve in the tenth game.

He was then simply too good for Volandri, who ran out of steam and lost his serve twice before bowing out with a wide forehand.

“It was very very tight, much tighter than the scoreline would suggest,” said Murray.

“The key today was to be patient, with all these long rallies.”

Looking ahead, he added: “Novak is number one in the (ATP points) Race and he won the first Grand Slam of the year so it’s gonna be tough. He’s been very good in his first match.”

Ljubicic, who showed no mercy in knocking out Gustavo Kuerten on Monday, was helpless on centre court against Djokovic.

Following an early exchange of breaks, Djokovic broke his opponent’s serve in the fifth game and the Serb held on to take the first set.

After breaking again early in the second, he saved two break points in the eighth game before wrapping up victory when Ljubicic netted a forehand.

“It was not easy, we had only met two years ago in Zagreb in an indoor tournament” said Djokovic, who was presented with the ATP 2007 Most Improved Player of the year award.

Both players used to practice together and Djokovic said their friendship played a role.

“That is why I got off to a nervous start but then I played at a very good level,” he said.

IMPORTANT WIN

“In the end I came up with a straight-set win, which is very important for me at the start of the claycourt season.

“Even though I faced a lot of break points, I played my best tennis in the most important moments and that’s what matters actually most.”

Former world number one Marat Safin made light work of Belgian Xavier Malisse with a 6-3 6-2 win in a first round match.

The Russian wildcard secured victory in 62 minutes on his first match point when Malisse sent a forehand wide.

Safin next meets fifth seed David Ferrer of Spain.

France’s miserable run at the claycourt tournament continued with Marc Gicquel being thrashed 6-0 6-4 by Finn Jarkko Nieminen, who set up a second-round encounter with Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Sebastien Grosjean retired with a thigh injury from his first-round match against Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic when trailing 4-6 6-4 4-1. Gilles Simon suffered a 6-1 6-1 drubbing by Spain’s Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo.

There was no scare for 12th seed Tommy Robredo, who went through with a 6-4 7-5 defeat of Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka.
